New Cohesion Report

On the 10 November 2010 the European Commission presented the preliminary version for reform of the EU`s cohesion policy: The fifth report on economic, social and territorial cohesion.

On the 10 November 2010 the European Commission presented the preliminary version for reform of the EU`s cohesion policy. This publication marks the official start of discussions on the future of EU cohesion policy after 2013. The report analysis the impacts and outcomes of the past financial period (2000-2006) by comparing economic growth and employment rates in every European region. Regarding the  current financial period (2007-2013) the report pointed out that the main focus will be on finding ways to help member states achieve the ambitious goals of the Europe 2020 strategy, notably in relation to economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction and energy efficiency.
The Commission`s preliminary report will be discussed in the next months within the consultation period which will be closed at the end of January with the Fifth Cohesion Forum in Brussels (31 January and 1 February). Till then interested parties, including national and European associations of local and regional governments, are invited to submit their priorities and wishes for the future of EU cohesion policy to the EU.
During this process a conference with the topic “Cohesion in Europe: Regions take up the Challenge - Towards a visionary and innovative regional policy for all European” organized by AER and Brussels-Capital will take place on 7 December in Brussels. The conference is free of charge and all relevant stakeholders can take part and contribute to this event.
